F.A.C.T. began in 1991 as a grassroots collaborative community response to domestic violence. In 1995, the Victims Advocacy Section of the San Antonio Police Department was established to offer direct and more comprehensive services to victims and families dealing with domestic violence. From the beginning, F.A.C.T. has been a part of the Victim's Advocacy Section.
Training
Volunteers invest time in learning to intervene effectively with victims of domestic violence. A multi-disciplinary team of facilitators from the community provide training. During these sessions participants learn the basic dynamics of domestic violence, effective crisis intervention skills, and the types of available community resources.
Volunteers must attend 20 hours of training. These training sessions are scheduled each quarter: January, April, July and October. F.A.C.T. is also part of Volunteers in Policing (VIP), the volunteer program for the entire Police Department. In addition to F.A.C.T. training, the volunteer must attend an eight-hour VIP orientation/training session.
